Port Community System Suriname enters installation and configuration phase

The National Port Community System Suriname project is continuing to make steady progress. Following the completion of the fact-finding phase for both the Port Community System and the Access Control System, the project has now entered the installation and configuration stage.

This marks an important step towards a more connected port environment, where organisations can exchange information more efficiently and work together through clearer, more reliable processes. A modern Port Community System helps bring the different parties within a port community closer together by creating one shared digital foundation.

From research to practical implementation

During the fact-finding phase, the project team gathered insights into existing procedures, operational requirements and the needs of the organisations involved. These findings now form the basis for the technical setup and future working methods within the system.

The installation and configuration phase focuses on preparing the necessary environments, workflows and project deliverables. This includes the vessel call procedure guideline, user acceptance test environment, work instructions, communications plan and test plan.

Each of these elements plays an important role in ensuring that the platform is not only technically ready, but also practical for daily use. A Port Community System is most effective when it supports the way users work, while also creating more structure and visibility across the wider port ecosystem.

Building alignment across the port community

Technology is only one part of a successful digital transformation. Clear communication, stakeholder involvement and shared ownership are equally important. To support this, a Stakeholder Focus Group has been established.

Each user organisation has appointed representatives who act as points of contact for the project team. They help communicate important updates internally, collect feedback from colleagues and make sure that the needs of their organisation remain visible throughout the implementation process.

The first Stakeholder Focus Group meeting has already taken place, creating a strong starting point for ongoing collaboration between the project team and the organisations that will eventually use the system.

Preparing super users for daily operations

The next step is identifying super users within each participating organisation. These users will play a key role once the system moves closer to live operation.

Super users will support colleagues, manage user access within their organisation and act as a first point of contact for practical questions. By involving them early, organisations can build internal knowledge before the wider user group starts working with the platform.

This approach supports a smoother rollout and helps ensure that the transition to new processes feels manageable for users. It also creates a stronger connection between the technical platform and the daily operational reality of each organisation.

Strategic support for long-term success

The project is also moving forward at a strategic level. The first Project Steering Committee Executives Meeting has taken place, bringing together executive representatives from the organisations involved in the steering committee.

This level of engagement is essential for a project that affects multiple stakeholders across a port community. Strategic alignment helps create clear decision-making, maintain momentum and ensure that the shared ambitions of the project remain central throughout the implementation.

Ports depend on a wide range of organisations, processes and information flows. Creating a more connected environment requires cooperation at every level, from daily operations and user management to long-term strategic planning.

Looking ahead to testing, integration and training

Over the coming weeks, the focus will shift further towards testing, integration meetings and training activities. These steps will help validate the processes, prepare users and make sure that the platform is ready for the next phase of implementation.

The progress so far shows a strong level of commitment across the port community. The collaboration between the participating organisations reflects shared energy, alignment and determination to make the initiative successful.

As the project continues, Suriname moves closer to a more integrated digital infrastructure for port-related processes. This will support better information exchange, stronger cooperation and more efficient operations across the port community.

For organisations looking to improve terminal operations alongside wider port collaboration, solutions such as a Terminal Operating System, Port Management System or logistics ERP platform can play an important role in creating a connected operational environment.
